The Ninjato (忍者刀, ninjatō?), also known as ninjaken (忍者剣?) or shinobigatana (忍刀?), was thought to be the sword carried by a Ninja.

This is  the most common name for the Japanese sword that the ninja were thought to have carried.

is often depicted as being a short sword, often portrayed as having a straight blade with a .square tsuba

Tsuba are very collectible items themselves. The Ninjato was thought to be about 24 inches in length and weigh only 2 pounds.

The scabbard of the ninjato was often longer than the sword itself, to facilitate faster drawing of the weapon.

Ninja or Shinobi were a form of secret agents employed for secret arts methods of espionage, assassination, infiltration and sabotage between warring overlords in Medieval Japan.
They did not have the strict code of honour of the Samurai and were a very secret organisation.
The mysterious nature of the ninja has long captured popular imagination in Japan, and later the rest of the world.

Ninjas figure prominently in folklore and legend, and as a result it is often difficult to separate historical fact from myth. Some legendary abilities include invisibility, walking on water, and control over natural elements.

The ninja is also prevalent in popular culture, appearing in many forms of entertainment media.
Some central Japansese villages specifically trained Ninjas in the Martial arts and they were rumoured to have mastrered the art of invisibility and were greatly feared.
Guilds of Ninja existed and a whole hierachy of  ninja assistants existed as a support resource for master ninjas.
Ninjas also operated as much feared mercenaries between warring overlords and princes.

For the money, the Bushman® knife might well be the strongest and sturdiest survival/outdoor knife in the world!

Unlike most hollow handled survival knives, there is no joint or seam between the blades and handles that requires a mechanical fastener.

This means that at that moment of DANGER you’ll be able to rely on this knife not to break (unlike some we’ve seen)

Instead, the Bushman’s® blades and integral handles are each solidly and expertly cold forged out of a single piece of 2.5mm thick SK-5 high carbon steel this means no joints – no weak point.

. The resulting knives are expertly heat-treated and tempered to RC54 and, when subjected to our tests, have withstood over two tons of pressure on their blade/handle transition! (now unless you are going to take on a Hippopotamus then you’ll be able to defend your self properly).

Each and every Bushman® blade has been carefully ground to an extra thin edge, and then honed and buffed by hand until razor sharp. That gives it that special cutting edge.

The Bushman® knives are versatile too!

Their hollow handles will accept survival supplies or a variety of handle extensions which can maximize reach.( Well you wouldn’t want to get too close sometimes !)

This knife features continuously curved blades that are ideal for skinning, and will pierce, cut, slash, slice and shear like you won’t believe.

You need somewhere safe to carry it so it comes complete with our new heavy duty Cordura Survival sheath which features an extra  utilitarian pocket on the front for storing small items.

This review is from: Cold Steel Bowie Blade Bushman, Black SK-5 Steel, Cordura Survival Shth (Sports)

I should preface this review by saying that I am not only a connoisseur of knives, but I am also a avid outdoorsman and heavy user of them as well. I use knives and I use them hard, none of them sit on a shelf or in a drawer collecting dust.

I bought the Bushman Bowie first because of its price, second, because I wanted to give Cold Steel a shot as a manufacturer. I was not disappointed in this blade.

The blade itself, at 7 inches long has a lot of utility. I have found the bowie design useful because it allows me to grip the back of the blade with ease for skinning and detailed carving. The point on the bowie is also aligned with the handle, making it better at sticking and penetrating; this makes a decent spear.

The blade is also thin, so don’t think you are getting a true bowie knife when you buy this blade. Because of this, chopping is not it’s strong point, but it will chop branches if need be. However, the thinness is a virtue, as it is lighter, slices better for food prep, and makes it more functional as a spear (a thick blade would not make a great spear). The metal is tempered softer than some knives; 54rc, but this has it’s advantages. This steel is less likely to chip, instead, under the worst abuse the edge would simply roll or dent, which could be easily fixed with stone out of a creek. A chip on the other hand could be detrimental in a survival scenario.
This metal is also much easier to sharpen; another wilderness virtue.

The spear function is what I like most about this knife. Just chop down a small sapling, jam it in the hollow handle, and you have a functional hunting or defense weapon, and you can even use it to harvest fruits and nuts that may grow high in the treetops and normally inaccessible. If you need more chopping power, you can also jam a stick in the handle that is just long enough to extend your grip a few more inches (or more!). Then, you can grip the end of your new handle and have much greater leverage when swinging and chopping. Nifty!

The strength of this knife is superb. It is a one piece construction, with the handle part folded and welded into a tube. The weld line appears seamless; Cold Steel did an excellent job finishing it up. I have beaten my knife in ways that one would never need to in any normal circumstance just to test the strength. I’ve wacked the weld line with a hammer repeatedly, and not a dint, ding, or crack anywhere. This blade could survive an atomic blast.

Overall, this would make an excellent survival knife. Lightweight, sturdy, easy to sharpen, holds a great edge, can be a spear, can hold an emergency kit in the handle, anything else I’m missing here?! Good knife, get one, you won’t be disappointed.

This review is from: Cold Steel Bowie Blade Bushman, Black SK-5 Steel, Cordura Survival Shth (Sports)

cold steel has some great products. this one is probably my favorite so far. the steel is softer so a metal file works great at actually making that painted bevel a functional part of the blade as it should be. mine is almost sharp enough to shave Rambo style. softer steel also makes the blade harder to break. apparently it will flex more under pressure. so what if softer steel doesn’t hold an edge as long as a scalpel or whatever. really now, how many times do you think you will need to stab your next meal before it either runs off or dies?

a long wood shovel handle fits great in the end and has a nice screw hole to fix it in place.

if you haven’t already gone to the cold steel website, go there now and check out the PDF on how badass a spear can be in the hands of somebody who knows what he is doing. disclaimer: no matter what you see some dumb ass on TV or in the movies doing, just take it easy and don’t try anything stupid or you just might get hurt… duh. martial arts/hunting, etc. take a lifetime to master.

this is some serious ghetto whoop ass action though. now go sharpen up on your kung fu then go take down a woolly mammoth or something. now that you know the secret power of the spear, be sure to watch Michael Caine and the brits getting their asses handed to them by a bunch of spear chucking warriors in the historically accurate movie: Zulu.

enjoy :)

*oh yeah, it is balanced such that it can double as a throwing knife. sweet!

The Wave Multitool From Leatherman: Better than Ever

The most popular full-size Leatherman tool is now better than ever. Larger knives, stronger pliers, longer wire cutters and all-locking blades make the new Wave an essential piece of equipment for any job or adventure. The pliers have been redesigned to withstand more than double the previous squeezing load, and the new bronze bushing makes one-handed knife access a smooth operation — plus, the one-at-a-time blade selection function means that the tool you want is the tool you get. The versatile Wave comes with a durable and attractive leather/nylon combination sheath.

The Wave includes several screw bits for added versatility.

User Features

This Wave model has four exterior blades that can be accessed even while the tool is closed. (Note: the knife blade can only be opened when the tool is closed.) You can open the blades with one hand by placing your thumb in the thumbhole at the base of the blade, and rotating until the knife is fully extended. This securely engages the locking mechanism.

The saw and file both have nail nicks at their tips for easy access.

The locking mechanism is marked with a padlock symbol on the tool itself. To unlock the blades, all you have to do is press the locking mechanism toward the handle until the blade slides past the lock.

Accessing the interior features is a snap, too — just grip the handles and rotate them open.

Each interior blade can be opened by using the nail nicks.

The scissors extend in the very same way, and they lock into place for secure, safe use.

And of course, it’s easy to change the tool bits, too.

Just remove the bit from the driver and pop a new one into place.

T. Hassler – See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Leatherman 830039 New Wave Multitool with Leather/Nylon Combination Sheath (Tools & Home Improvement)

One thing that chaps my hide is a cheap tool. I don’t like ‘em, I don’t buy ‘em and I avoid using them if I don’t have to. Leatherman is well known for their quality and they don’t disappoint here.

Good Points:
This New Wave is extremely well built.
Resists torque/twisting that some other multi-tools don’t.
Nice heft, but not too heavy to slip in a pocket.
Smooth and comfortable finish in the hand.
A really nice selection of functional tools.
Great tool locking, easy to release (but only when you want!)

I’ve used several other multi-tools and beyond the novelty, I never really enjoyed the flip out style (Gerber) because it seemed a bit unstable and difficult to put back. And most of the others cut into the palm. The only detractor is the price, but I don’t mind paying for quality and this baby delivers.

3.0 out of 5 stars Overrated but still great, January 14, 2010

(TOP 500 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Leatherman 830039 New Wave Multitool with Leather/Nylon Combination Sheath (Tools & Home Improvement)

Leatherman claims this is their best selling multitool. Most reviews on Amazon and online forums are super positive. Does the Wave live up to the hype? Yes, to some extent, but it has some issues, mainly cost and weight.

The good:

This is a nice full-featured multitool. You get one plain-edge and one serrated knife, both can be opened with one hand without opening the whole tool. Useful set of scredrivers: large and medium plain, medium philips, micro plain and philips for eyeglasses. Wood saw, and nice metal file + saw. Can opener and kinda-OK scissors. All in all, good set of tools, and all lock securely in place. Of course, it also has full sized pliers :)

The bad:

- Heavy: 8.5 oz, or 240 grams. Too heavy to carry in my pants pocket. I don’t carry tools on my belt, but probably this would feel heavy there also.
- Because of the outside opening blades, there are sharp edges when the tool is closed, which I can imagine would eat through your pocket if you put it there.
- Blades designed for right-hand thumb opening. If a knife is designed for one-hand opening, I would much rather have it ambidextrous.
- Ruler (cm and inches) is much less useful than on other tools, because it is on the inside. You open the whole tool to use it, and the pliers get in the middle of the ruler line. Also the ruler markings are not as clearly readable as other tools. For me, the ruler is actually a very useful feature, so the Wave scores a minus here.
- Medium philips and plain screwdriver are actually in a bit holder, which has many issues: too short, feels a little flimsy, and the bits are not standard size, so you can’t use anything but what you buy from Leatherman. This is another minus compared to other simpler and cheaper multitools.
- Unusual amount of friction when opening the screwdrivers. May only be an issue on mine.

Recommendations:

This is a good tool if you can get it on sale. Even so, I think you should look at these alternatives:

Leatherman Blast: same size and same tools as Wave except the extra serrated blade. Lighter (6.9 oz or 196 grams) and considerably cheaper. Philips screwdriver is fixed and way better (bit driver is sold separately if you need it). Knife blade is a tad bit longer than Wave. Ruler is way better. No sharp edges to snag in your pocket. Only downside is that none of the tools open from the outside; to open the knife, you neeed to open the whole tool. I own one and I think it is Leatherman’s best overall tool.

Leatherman Juice series: smaller and lighter than the Wave, and shaped smoother, more contoured to be pocket-friendly. Blades etc can be accessed from the outside, but not one-hand openers like the Wave. The main downside is that the pliers are a little smaller, but not a big deal in most cases. This is Leatherman’s answer to the Swiss Army Knife – most even have cork openers :) I own one and I like it.

Victorinox SwissTool and Spirit: most tools accessible from the outside but blade is not one-hand opener. Fit and finish is better than anything Leatherman makes. I do not own them, but they are next on my list when I decide to buy another multitool.

I hope this was helpful!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent tool, but the case is a joke., November 15, 2005

This review is from: Leatherman 830039 New Wave Multitool with Leather/Nylon Combination Sheath (Tools & Home Improvement)

A few days ago, I recieved this item as a gift. I’ve always been a multi-tool and Swiss-knife nut, so I’m not going to rant about how amazing the tiny scissors are like the first-timers.
Right out of the box, there was none of the usual stiffness Leathermen usually have for the first couple days of use. Usually I have to toy around with all the extras while watching a movie marathon to get these things loose. But the Wave? Nice and loose, took me ten minutes to believe it. I was able to just slip it in a pocket before running off to a job, I’m the building’s unnofficial handyman, and this silver darling didn’t disappoint.
A few days later, I’ve managed to use most of the tools enough to get a feel for the quality.
The pliers are very easy to handle compared to my usual set of needles, I’m considering clearing that spot on my belt in favor of the pair on this multi-tool. The screwdrivers, both flatheads in eyeglass size and standard, worked very nicely with the way the folded knife forms a handle to twist. The bit-driver flathead/phillips seems like a nice trick so far, simply for the phillips head. The scissors worked fine cutting this rebellious piece of wire that was too close to a knot to use the built-in wire cutts built into the pliers.
Later on, I tried the wire cutters on some old brass wire and they performed good enough to save me a trip to the toolbox.
I love the knives. Both the straight-edge and serrated can be opened with one hand, pending you’re right handed. Simply hold the folded knife in your palm and unfold the knife with the thumb-latch sticking out. It’s no switchblade, but it’s easier than the Swiss knives when it comes to quick drawing. The wood-file and saw can also be used while the tool is folded, although I wouldn’t recommend flipping the saw out one-handed. It’s a good tool, but flesh is softer than steel, don’t risk it.
And every single featue of this knife, from the tiny screwrdver I used to salvage my sunglasses to the serrated hunting knife, lock in place. And can be unlocked with a thumblatch that’s just reachable enough to keep everything one-handed without it slicing closed during use. Truly, these locks should be on even the cheaper knives, rather than as a higher-priced feature.
…and the case that came with it, offered less function and comfort than my girlfriend’s three-dollar thong. Which is probably made from the same cheap leather. The first time I remembered it was in the box and put the tool in, it fought back! The leather is so stiff it bends back like cardboard. After a day of spraying it with a water bottle, it softened up slightly and is now slightly usuable, although I still keep this compact tool in my pocket.
And the holster supposedly has three accesory pockets. All I see are two pinkie-finger sized slots on the sides of the cloth covers, and this little flap strapped against the back of the holster interior. Maybe, just maybe, you could fit two drill bits and half a stick of gum in there with your Leatherman. But actual accesories, or something I’d use? No way. They also make a nylon version, for six bucks, which I’ve never seen up-close and won’t make assumptions about, mine just came with the leather.
Overall, this little guy has a new home in the change pocket of my jeans. A real tool, that is worth the price. And it’s parody of a holster? Well, maybe I could sell it off as a cell-phone case to this blind guy across the hall.

Leatherman Wave Video Rating: 0 / 5

The Wave is the flagship of the Leatherman line, and we would argue that it’s the company’s most versatile multitool to date.

It comes loaded with 17 different tools, including everything from pliers to screwdrivers to wire cutters.

We really like the Wave’s quality construction, its four locking blades, and the fact that the user can get at the knife without having to open up the whole tool–a nice improvement over the original model.

While nobody’s going to replace a tool set or do major auto repairs with the Wave, it’s absolutely invaluable for a wide range of quick, on-the-spot jobs.

It’s 4in. folded down, this stainless steel multi-tool weighs only 8 oz.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh no another Wave review!!!, July 22, 2002

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Leatherman 67010103H Wave (Tools & Home Improvement)

I’m using multi tools since the day they were invented. And if they haven’t been invented I would have to do it my self so thank you Mr. Leatherman. I never liked Leatherman products because plier’s handles were pinching my hands (original tool). For a while I wondered of and bought into Gerber family than Shrade and Swiss Army. After multiple failures I decided to give Leatherman Wave a try and I’m not disappointed. So here we go:

Strengths:
- Comfortable handles even if using pliers to tight down the nastiest nuts and bolts.
- One hand operation for knife use. Life saver in many situations.
- Locking saw, file and serrated/regular knife blades. Not for nothing but it will save you fingers.
- Wide choice of tools at your finger tips. Can opener/bottle opener is there!!!! I can’t believe that some of the tools come without it.
- Strong pliers and good wire cutters.
- Spring loaded scissors.
- Screwdriver tool attachment
- Blade stays sharp.

Weaknesses:
- Tools are not secured in place. The lock is spring loaded (the same one as blades on regular Swiss army knife) there is a danger of a tool folding down on you. Not a problem for regular everyday jobs but if you have a tight/rusty screw watch out.
- Not rust proof. I use it on the river and if it wasn’t for regular maintenance and WD40 my tool would be a history.
- Wire cutters even if sharp are made out of soft steel so when faced with tough wire they will become dull or even bend.

Ok so why 5 stars? Just because it’s the best tool made so far. There is nothing better made out there. Yes it has its problems and some design flows but in comparison to hundreds of similar products available out there this one really stands out. My Wave was stolen in Africa and while looking for replacement I tested multiple tools of similar shape and purposes but guess what? I’m back with the Wave again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny, September 30, 2002

John Shaft “Can ya dig it” (Needham, MA USA) – See all my reviews
This review is from: Leatherman 67010103H Wave (Tools & Home Improvement)

I got the original leatherman in the summer of 1994 when I was planning to do a lot of camping. Then I upgraded to the Wave as a present for myself around Xmas 98 (the original went in my fishing tackle box). I have worn it every day on my belt, most days accompanied by a compact tape measure as well. I get a lot of teasing for it from my friends, but it doesn’t matter. The Wave is indespensable, I like to say it’s not always the right tool, but it’s always the “right there” tool. I use it for work as an engineer, on home repair projects, whenever the need arises. I use it least once a day, if not more. A perfect gift for any mechanically inclined person on your shopping list. Hands down the best multi-tool around.Drawbacks? When I first got it, I cut my thumb a couple of times trying to one-hand open the external blades. The scissors and the serrated blade have gotten a little dull and I am not sure how to sharpen them. There are too many flat screwdrivers (4 in all). I would get rid of one of them in favor of something else.

4.0 out of 5 stars Compact and Useful, December 4, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Leatherman 67010103H Wave (Tools & Home Improvement)

I ended up getting the Leatherman Wave for its one-hand opening blades, good needlenose pliers and compact size.

Pros go first:
Compact in size – really important for me as a EDC (every day carry) tool. If it weren’t a EDC, I probably would get a SwissTool, which is…cheaper now at amazon.com.

Solid – All tools have solid feel (except the scissors). Blades are locked positively. Pliers are strong. So are the rest.

Here come the Cons:
All tools are stiff to open – Only the serrated sheepfoot blade is relatively easy to open. Lubrication doesn’t help. Break-in may eventually help. It’s not user servicable as it uses tamper-proof torx-plus screws all over. Send it back to the factory for any adjustments.

Too many flat screwdrivers (4) – I’d rather replace one flat screwdriver with something else.

Handles wobble in closed position – No play in deployed position but has < 1/8″ play when closed. It’s very noticable when you open blade using one hand. It’s not mentioned in web reviews but talked a lot in newsgroups. Every Wave does that and it doens’t seem to hurt the durability. Just doesn’t match the overall quality of the tool and yes, annoying.

Poor scissors – Scissors wobble. The pivot rivet is not tight (probably for a reason because scissor blades are slightly curved for better shearing). When handle is fully depressed, blade points cross each other by 1/8″ which is really annoying for fine cutting. However, I don’t expect to use it very often. Scissors on SwissTool or Gerber multi-tool (no wonder, it’s a Fiskars company that makes excellent scissors) are much better.

Fit and Finish – It’s good but you won’t be happy if you are a Swiss knife owner. Handle, bolsters and pliers are finished smoothly. All other tools have clear signs of machining. Random nicks, marks on handles and pliers. I went to a local store to check out all Leatherman Wave (8 of them) in plastic package and they all have nicks or marks. I guess workers just toss the products into the bins in the factory. I’d rather put the sign of heavy use by myself.

A combination of Wave and SwissTool will be great. It doesn’t exist for now and I chose Wave.
